32 weeks + hot dogs & squash

Poppyseed is almost 4 pounds this week! (Well, supposedly.) I had my 32 week check-up on Tuesday, and all is going well. I have been really blessed with a healthy pregnancy on Poppyseed's side of things... he has been doing GREAT. (Just his momma who has to deal with all the side effects, haha.)

Luckily, my back has been feeling a lot better. It's just more general lower back pain vs. the super sharp pain in my SI joint. I can definitely handle general muscle/joint soreness.

Nothing super exciting happened this week... pretty much a boring week in the pregnancy world. I definitely do not forget that I am pregnant though - he is moving all the time. I have also been having a few Braxton Hicks contractions, which are a little uncomfortable, but really not a big deal. They give me an excuse to go lay down for awhile. ;)

Our friends had us over one night for a bonfire and wienie roast. Let me say, I typically do not like hot dogs very much, but this hot dog tasted SO good. I might have even had a second one. (So unlike me... before know it, I'll be eating beans & wienies every night.) It was a perfect night for a fire and to catch up with some friends.

32 Weeks - The Facts

Poppyseed's size: Jicama! And yes, I know what a jicama is... it's actually really good. They remind me a lot of water chestnuts (at least the texture.) I love it chopped up on salads, but I always forget to pick them up at the store.

Sleep: Overall, much better. Still have days when I wake up super early (like 4am)... I just choose to make those extra productive days.

Movement: He is definitely a mover!

Running/Workouts: The elliptical and I are becoming BFF's.

Cravings: The usual suspects - mac & cheese, cheese quesadillas, straight up cheese sliced from the block. I've also been loving the autumn squash soup at Panera... there was an instance where I was there two days in a row. (At least it's semi-healthy, maybe? Vegetables?) Let's just say my skin might be turning orange.

What I am missing: Sleeping on my belly, and running in this gorgeous weather. I just keep reminding myself how awesome it will be to start running again in January. With the beautiful snowstorms, ice-coated streets, and sub-zero temps. Haha.... yea.

Looking forward to: Heading to Michigan this afternoon to soak up some time with my Business Man! We are staying at our favorite B&B and even have a massage scheduled for tomorrow. And of course, the good food. Cannot wait.

31 weeks + baby shower fun

This week was an exciting one! Poppyseed is growing like a weed and I can definitely feel it. My belly is constantly itchy, and it is stretching like woah. My SI joint pain has decreased significantly, but my back and hips still hurt a lot in general. It is SO much more manageable though... I can handle this level of pain for another two months.

Last weekend, I got to head home to IL for a baby shower to celebrate Poppyseed's arrival. Two of my aunts threw it for me, and I was very blessed by all the friends and family who came out to celebrate!

Three of my college girlfriends even came into town, and we got to spend the whole weekend together. We kicked it off Saturday with the annual Pumpkin Classic 10km at the Pumpkin Festival. This is one of my favorite races to run, and I was so happy to get to share the experience with my besties.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to run the whole race, but I jogged the first 3/4 mile with the girls, until the course turned off for the 2-mile walk. I waited for my mom to catch up, and finished walking with her. At least I earned my pumpkin donut! ;)

That afternoon, we headed to the baby shower. It was held at a local Italian restaurant, and we had my favorite sandwich in the world - GONDOLAS! I was one happy momma-to-be. I brought mini cupcakes for dessert, and we also had some out of this world mini cheesecakes from a nearby bakery - That's So Sweet.

We were blessed with so many precious gifts for Poppyseed... onesies galore, diapers, blankets, bath essentials, burp cloths, stuffed animals, and tons of books. It was so much fun to go through it all with my Business Man once I got back to the Bean Town. (Now to organize it all and actually put it away... and to figure out what some of the things are for...)

Loved all the cute baby bags everything came in. I told my Business Man we were going to wrap all our Christmas gifts this year using baby bags... make life a little easier. ;)
It was such a great weekend at home... the last time I will be back in IL until Poppyseed is on the outside! Eeeeek!

31 Weeks - The Facts

Poppyseed's size: The weight of a coconut. (Yuck!)

Sleep: Ugh. Don't even want to talk about it.

Movement: Tons of it! We can even see it from the outside pretty regularly.

Running/Workouts: Several walks and a couple jaunts on the elliptical.

Cravings: Monical's pizza! Fortunately I was home last weekend, and able to satisfy that craving.

Ugh, this was so good. I want it again.
What I am missing: Running, duh. This perfect fall weather isn't helping. Also, being able to walk up and down stairs without getting short of breath. 

Looking forward to: A mini getaway next weekend to Michigan with my Business Man.

30 weeks + learning how to birth a child

Woah, it seems a little surreal to hit the big 3-0! The last decade of pregnancy (hopefully). After a somewhat heavy post last week, this week it's back to the usual. There hasn't been anything too eventful to report about, but I couldn't stand to skip a week. :-P

We did have our childbirth class on Monday which was kinda fun. We had the option of doing an all-day Saturday class or a shorter night class, and I'm glad we went with the shorter version. The class was led by an L&D nurse, and she showed several videos and answered questions. 

I will give props to the couples in the videos - they pretty much shared everything with the cameras when it comes to childbirth. We saw laboring methods, contractions, epidurals, vaginal births, c-sections. All while feasting on a meal of pizza & pop. (Glad I don't have a queasy stomach.)

The thing that freaks me out the most about childbirth is the possibility of an episiotomy. I am hoping to go natural (without an epidural) but the thought of the doctor making a cut in me just gives me the willies! The nurse said about 20-30% of women end up with episiotomies, so we shall see! I would much rather tear naturally.

The class ended with a tour of the birthing suite which was pretty neat. We got to see the labor & delivery rooms, as well as the postpartum rooms where my Business Man & I will actually stay with Poppyseed for 2-4 days, depending on whether we have a vaginal birth or c-section. (I've also tossed around the idea of letting my Business Man sleep at home... we live just half a mile from the hospital. I'm sure that will change once I'm stuck in the hospital though.) We also got to see both nurseries (regular and special care) where the babies can stay if you want/need some time to yourself.

Other randomness of the week: 

I've been trying to eat more eggs, because they are a good source of lecithin, which can help with joint pain. (Thanks to a friend back home for sending me that info!) But I am not a fan of scrambled eggs and I don't really know how else to cook them. Any ideas??!

My Business Man assembled Poppyseed's dresser. Yay! We picked it up at IKEA last weekend when were in Chicago. The nursery is almost finished. Just need some more clothes for our little man!

30 Weeks - The Facts

Poppyseed's size: Cabbage.... boring. I did not buy a head of cabbage this week because I knew I would not even attempt to eat it.

Sleep: Weird. Some nights good, some nights bad. I had a dream one night that I had the baby, except it was a fuzzy-eared pink piglet. And I was freaking out because I didn't know how to breastfeed it. But I do remember the ears being super soft.

Movement: Lots. My Business Man likes to 'play' with Poppyseed when I'm trying to sleep. I woke up the other morning to him poking my belly. Haha.

Running: Nada, but did get get in a couple elliptical and bike workouts. And a walk! Progress.

Cravings: I was really wanting a donut last Sunday but we didn't have time to stop before church. Boo.

My Business Man has conveniently plastered his face all over a billboard near the donut shop. Talk about tempting. I keep asking him to let me & Poppyseed be in the next billboard photo. Wouldn't a baby make you want to buy more insurance?!?
What I am missing: Running, ha. And having more than 2-3 shirts to choose from, lol.

Looking forward to: Going home this weekend for Poppyseed's baby shower! My best college girlfriends are all coming and we haven't seen each other since last December. I am SO excited to spend some quality girly time together.

29 weeks + pregnancy expectations

Ok, I'm gonna get real here for a minute. (Or ten.) Pregnancy is not what I expected it to be. It's definitely not all rainbows & butterflies like I imagined it would be.

Don't get me wrong, I am definitely NOT taking this pregnancy for granted. It was not easy for us to conceive, and I thank God daily for this gift of life. I love feeling his rolls and kicks and movement, and I cannot wait to meet him in a few months. However, pregnancy has been physically and emotionally difficult.

I have had a lot of lower back pain (particularly in the SI joint) over the past 2 months. I thought I had it pretty much under control until last week, when my left SI joint completely flared up again and I could barely walk. I am still having pain with every step and movement, a week later. And yes, I've seen the chiropractor. Yes, I've done all the stretching & strength exercises that he's instructed me to do. I have never felt pain like this before in my entire life. (Which makes me nervous for labor... but I can't really picture anything being more painful than this. We shall see!)

Needless to say, I haven't been running. And it has been driving me crazy. I always expected that I would run right up until the end of my pregnancy. I would be that girl who ran 5 miles the day she gave birth. It doesn't help that people always ask me, "Are you still running??!" 

I feel like there's this pressure for pregnant mommas-to-be to keep go-go-going just like they did before they were pregnant. And I am sure it is just pressure that I am putting on myself, but it really messes with my head. Joe Schmoe on the street doesn't care whether I am still running at this point in my pregnancy, but I do. I have let myself get so wrapped in the idea of being a "pregnant runner mama" that I am losing sight of the big picture.

Also, I had this vision of running the Boston Marathon next April, just 5 months after Poppyseed arrives. The plan was to run right up until my due date, take 4-6 weeks off, get right back at it, and run the marathon in April. And be that super bad-*** mom who ran the Boston Marathon just 5 months after giving birth! But if I have to stop running 2 months before giving birth, how will I possibly get back into shape quick enough to run a marathon, let alone the Boston Marathon?!!

We visited home last weekend, and the pastor at church spoke on a subject that really resonated with me. He spoke from 1 Corinthians 1:1-9 about our restored identity in Christ. It doesn't matter what we do here on this earth. My identity is NOT defined by how many miles I run each week. It is NOT defined by how much exercise I fit in during this pregnancy. It is NOT defined by how much weight I gain. (Which is a whole separate topic in itself.) What is my identity defined by? My relationship with Christ. And that's it.

Let's just say I was humbled on Sunday morning, and made some realizations. If I am not that cute pregnant runner mama, that's okay. If I don't run the Boston Marathon, that's okay. (And I'm not even going to sign up next week, so there's no possible way for me to run it.) If I don't lose the baby weight right away, that's okay. What matters is that I am living my life in a way that is honoring to God, and putting Him first. That I am making decisions that are best for my family, not just what I want to do to make myself look and feel good.

So here we are, and I'm pretty much hanging up my running shoes. I am signed up for a 10km in two weeks, and if I can waddle through it, I will try... but no pressure. (I don't want to throw away my $35. And there are pumpkin donuts at the end.) If for some reason the pain goes away, and I can get back out there, I absolutely will. But, if I can't, no big deal. Running will be there for me in December. :)

29 Weeks - The Facts

Poppyseed's size: Butternut squash! We ate some butternut squash pizza to celebrate. I kinda wish I had been doing this with the food all along.

Sleep: Pretty awful. The SI joint pain is worst when I'm lying down, especially when I try to roll over.

Movement: Tons of it. We can even feel specific body parts. Though I haven't been able to figure out which is what.

Running: Two runs for 8 miles total.

Cravings: We traveled back to IL Saturday morning, and I had my heart set on a McDonald's mocha. We stopped about 30 minutes into the drive, and their mocha machine was broken! Oh no. So we got back on the road, and stopped again, and fortunately the next McDonald's was able to provide the mocha. :)  

I also began to indulge my pumpkin cravings. I made pumpkin pecan scones at my mom's house on Monday morning. With a side of pumpkin spice coffee.... yummmm.

What I am missing: Running, ha. :-P Also, sleeping on my stomach.

Looking forward to: Childbirth class on Monday... we get to tour the birthing suite as well. And they are giving us pizza. Win win.
